Rio+20: UN Conference on Sustainable Development kicks off with call to action  
More than 100 Heads of State and government today gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the start of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which seeks to shape new policies to promote global prosperity, reduce poverty and advance social equity and environmental protection.    
Rio+20: Ban announces more than 100 commitments on sustainable energy  
Speaking at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced that more than one hundred commitments and actions have been already mobilized in support of the UN’s global sustainable energy initiative. “Achieving sustainable energy for all is not only possible, but necessary – it is the golden thread that connects development, social inclusion and environmental protection,” Secretary-General Ban said at a press conference at Rio+20, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.    
Rio+20: Development banks to invest $175 billion in sustainable transport  
The eight largest multilateral development banks (MDBs) announced today at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) that they will invest $175 billion in sustainable transportation systems over the coming decade.

9 May 2012 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged countries to make progress in their negotiations of the outcome document for the United Nations Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20) next month. “We are at a crucial stage,” Mr. Ban told the members of the General Assembly in New York this afternoon. “We have about 40 days – and 40 nights – to Rio. We must use every moment.”    
UN Secretary-General in European Commission’s commitment to Sustainable Energy for All Initiative  
“I welcome the commitment by the European Commission in support of the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative. Its strong leadership in making energy central to its development policies, and for advancing the issue of energy access, helps place energy at the forefront of the global development agenda,” said the Secretary-General during his keynote address to the European Union (EU) Sustainable Energy for All Summit today in Brussels.
